The following is a very important circular from the Indian Army issued way back in 1975 saying that every Sikh soldier joining the army will have to give an undertaking that if he will cut his hair or trim his beard or moustache, it will be treated as disobedience and will make him liable for disciplinary action.

The circular also states that those who have short hair may be recruited in the army, but they “will however be required to sign a certificate to the effect that while in service they will grow hair, beard and moustache as per customs of SIKH religion”.

This meets a long-standing demand of the Sikhs and it is now up to the SGPC and other Panthic Organisations to get this mandatory policy decision implemented to its fullest.

Sikh Woman: 1st Turbaned Pilot In US

The Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI) reported today that Arpinder Kaur, 28, of San Antonio, Texas has become the first turbaned pilot hired by a commercial airline in the UnitedStates. As a Sikhni, she has helped pave the way for both Sikh men and women who wear a dastaar/turban to fulfill their passion for flying. No longer does flying just have to be an extra-curricular activity for these Sikhs, but it can also be an every-day job!

Image: http://thelangarhall.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/image002.jpg (http://thelangarhall.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/image002.jpg)

In March 2008, after resolving the issue of wearing her dastaar on-the-job, with the help of the Sikh Coalition, Arpinder Kaur was officially hired by American Airlines Corporation (AMR) as a First Officer. She filed her grievance for accommodation of her religious article of faith based on American Airlines’ allowance of “regulation approved hats”. An agreement was reached that is consistent with state and federal anti-discrimination law. In June 2008 she finished her pilot training program and is now flying Embraer Jets for American Eagle, a regional airline that is part of AMR based out of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

When Arpinder Kaur was asked why she chose to do this, she said:

“Two of the reasons I did this were: first, my love of flying and, second, to set a precedent for the community so they know you can be in your Sikh appearance and do anything out there; so that my younger brothers and sisters [the rising generation] will pursue their passions while practicing their Sikh faith.”

Her passion for flying first started when at the age of 15 she got to sit in the cockpit of an airplane when moving from Panjab. Despite having a degree in Information Systems and her mother’s belief that it was too dangerous for a girl to be a pilot, Kaur has chosen to follow her passion; while using it as a means for supporting her family. Kaur said it was the love and support of her husband, Pritpal Singh that pushed her forward on the path toward becoming a pilot. Kulbir Singh Sandhu, captain with AMR mentored her throughout her aviation career. From 2003 to 2005 Kaur was trained by Jesse Sherwood in Kansas. With the help of these individuals and others along with her own perseverance and determination, Kaur and American Airlines have shown that accommodation and not assimilation is the way to harness the strength of diversity in America.

Harinder Singh, executive director of the Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI) in San Antonio, Texas said, “This is a great day for the Sikhs in America. Religious accommodation, not assimilation, is what the founders of this great nation envisioned and we are thrilled American Airlines celebrates the rich religious and cultural diversity of all American populations.”

Here is a short film on Arpinder Kaur and “piloting”:

*Beijing Olympic Games - Women's Participation*_*

With more than 42 per cent female athletes, Beijing sets a new record for women's participation in Olympic Games. Out of 11,196 total athletes, there are 4,746 women currently giving their best across various Olympic sports. Women’s participation in the Olympic Games has grown increasingly, particularly within the last two decades.

_Women in the spotlight

_The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games kicked off with 63 female flag bearers leading their delegations into the Olympic stadium during the Opening Ceremony on 8 August. On 9 August, Katerina Emmons from the Czech Republic became the first woman to win a gold medal in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games by winning the women's 10m air rifle event in shooting. Among the female competitors in Beijing, the female athletes from Europe have won most of the medals so far, followed by their Asian counterparts.
_

From Rome to Beijing

_Whilst the 611 women who participated in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome represented just 11.5 per cent of the athletes, women’s participation had leaped to represent close to 22 per cent by the Olympic Games in 1980 in Moscow. At the Sydney Games in 2000, the number of female athletes reached more than 38 per cent, with 4,069 women of a total of 10,651 athletes. Athens, four years later, saw 4,306 female athletes competing out of a total of 10,568. In 2004, women were in the spotlight in no less than 135 events and in 26 of the 28 Olympic sports. In Beijing, women will compete in the same number of sports but in 137 events.

*Dil ke dayere mein utar ke dekho
Tum mohabbat humse kar ke dekho
Phir tumhe meri talab ho jayegi
Tum kabhi mujhse bichad ke dekho

Ishq ka saagar bahut gehra hai
Doob kar khud bhi ubhar ke dekho
Duniya phir lagne lagegi dilkash
Ishko tum meri nazar se dekho

Pyaar kehte hai kise zara tum
Meri baanho mein bikhar ke dekho
Mera gum mehsoos karna ho to
Meri raahon se guzar ke dekho

Kya asar hota hai berukhi ka
Meri chahat se mukar ke dekho
Jo mohabbat ne hai dekha tum bhi
Unhi aankhon mein sawar ke dekho*

*Hello Friends,

* *Say "I Love My India" because we are living in Indian with such a wonders of our Nation.

* _*Taj Mahal*_

*Lovers die, but love shall not and death shall have no dominion...*
*In the year 1607 when a prince of the royal Mughal household strolled down the Meena Bazaar, accompanied by a string of fawning courtiers, he caught a glimpse of a girl hawking silk and glass beads. Five years and a wife later (in those days princes did not marry for love alone) the regal 20-yr-old went to wed his 19-yr-old bride. It was a fairytale union from the start, one that withstood court intrigues, battles for succession and finally, the grand coronation. And when she died on the 19th year of their marriage, he etched her story in stone. The Taj Mahal is the living symbol of the monumental passion of Shah Jahan and Arjumand Banu. Which other love story has so grand a memorial?*

_*Golden Temple*_

*The Golden Temple or Darbar Sahib, situated in Amritsar , Punjab , is the most sacred temple for Sikhs. It is a symbol of the magnificence and strength of the Sikh people all over the world. In the evolution of the Darbar Sahib, is entwined the history and ideology of Sikhism. In its architecture are included, symbols associated with other places of worship. This is an example of the spirit of tolerance and acceptance that the Sikh philosophy propounds. *
*Sri Harmandir Sahib, also known as Sri Darbar Sahib or Golden Temple , (on account of its scenic beauty and golden coating for English speaking world), is named after Hari(God) the temple of God . The Sikhs all over the world, daily wish to pay visit to Sri Amritsar and to pay obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib in their Ardas.*

_*Jog Falls*_

*Jog Falls, created by the Sharavathi River falling from a height of 253 meters (829 ft) is the highest plunge waterfall in India and the 7th deepest in the world. Located in Shimoga District of Karnataka state, these segmented falls are a major tourist attraction. It is also called by alternative names of Gerusoppe falls, Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi.*

_*The Gateway of India*

_ *The Gateway of India is a monument in Mumbai , India . Located on the waterfront in South Mumbai , the Gateway is a basalt arch 26 metres high. The Gateway is traditionally the first thing visitors arriving by boat would see of Mumbai. It is located next to the iconic Taj Mahal Palace & Tower. Behind the Gateway steps lead down to the waterfront, where boat trips can be had to locations such as Elephanta Island . The Gateway is built from yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. While Indo-Saracenic in architectural style, elements are derived from the Muslim architectural styles of 16th century Gujarat . The central dome is 15 meters in diameter and 26 meters above ground at its highest point. The whole harbour front was realigned in order to come in line with a planned esplanade which would sweep down to the centre of the town. The cost of the construction was Rs. 21 lakhs, borne mainly by the Government of India. For lack of funds, the approach road was never built, and so the Gateway stands at an angle to the road leading up to it.*

*_Vidya sagar Setu_

**Vidyasagar Setu, commonly known as the Second Howrah Bridge or Second Hooghly Bridge , is a bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. It links the city of Howrah to its twin city of Kolkata . The bridge is a toll bridge for vehicles. It is the longest bridge of its type in India and one of the longest in Asia . The bridge is named after the 19th century Bengali reformist Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. The bridge also has sister bridges over the river at different points, namely the Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu) and the Vivekananda Setu. The Vidyasagar Setu is a cable-stayed bridge, with a main span of a little over 457 metres, and a deck 35 metres wide. Construction started in 1978 and the bridge was finally inaugurated on the 10th of October, 1992. The commissioning agency was the Hooghly River Bridge Commission (HRBC) and the contractors for the construction were the consortium of Braithwaite, Burn and Jessop also called BBJ.*

_*The Kanyakumari*_

*There are no words that can completely describe the beauty of Kanyakumari and it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations of south India . Located in the southernmost point of the Indian mainland, it is a magnificent place of natural beauty where you can see the deep blue waters of the ocean meeting the horizon. This southernmost town of Tamil Nadu is an important attraction for the tourists. Before you set out on a tour, you should have enough information about Kanyakumari that would help you explore the town conveniently.*

_*The Hampi*_

*Welcome to the city of Hampi , the imperial capital of The Great Vijayanagar Empire. The city of victory carved in stone that once flourished and rivaled Rome in terms of beauty, magnitude and population. Till today, each rock in the ruins speak volumes of the grandeur, and majesticity it experienced 5 centuries ago. HAMPI, the " Pompeii of India ", is a dream come true for archaeologists, historians, art-lovers or tourists. Forts, Palaces, temples, sculptures, baths, Irrigation canals, bazaar ruins of a civilization belonging to the medieval era, Preserved in stone. It was also an important centre under the Chalukyan dynasty. In 1336 A.D., the two brothers, Harihara and Bukka, founded the Vijayanagara Empire, for the protection of dharama under the spiritual guidance of sage Vidyaranya at Hampi on the banks of the river Tungabhadra.*

*An englishman asked Santa, "How far is land"?
Santa: 2 KMs.
Englishman jumped into sea.
Englishman: Now, which direction?
Santa: Downwards
Two days of powercut in Delhi had made life miserable. Worst affected was Delhi Metro station where families of Santa & Banta were struck for 48 hrs on escalators
How did santa tried to kill a bird??
He took it to the top of a building and dropped it from there to die.

Santa: I have swallowed a key.
Doctor: When?
Santa: 3 months back!
Doctor: What were you doing till now?
Santa: I was using duplicate key, now I have lost it too.

Santa was drawing money from ATM.
Banta, who was just behind him in the line said: I've seen ur password. It’s ****.
Santa: U r wrong. It’s 1394.

Santa falls in love with a nurse... After much thinking, he finally writes a love letter to her: "I luv u sister."

Santa asked Banta: Why Manmohan Singh goes for a walk in evening? Banta: Very simple, because he is PM not AM.

Lady calls Santa for repairing door bell.
Santa doesn’t turns up for 4 days.
Lady calls again, Santa replies: I'm coming daily since 4 days, I press the bell but no one comes out.

Lady to Inspector Santa: My husband went to buy potatoes 5 days ago, he hasn't came back yet!
Santa: Why don't u cook something else?

An englishman and santa inside the toilet.
Englishman: Good evening, how do u do?
Santa: Good evening, we open the zip and do!

Jeeto yelled at santa: U're gonna b really sorry!
I'm going to LEAVE you!
Santa: Make up ur mind, which one is it gonna be!

Santa opened a petrol pump, but not even one customer went there. You know why?
Because he opened petrol pump on second floor..

Santa and Banta went for a drive.
Santa: Hey, look out from the window, are the indicators working or not?
Banta puts his head out & says "Yes-No, Yes-No, Yes-No, Yes-No!!!"

Santa's wife dies. He is calm, but his wife's lover is crying furiously...
Finally, santa consoles him: Don't worry buddy, I will marry again.

Why did santa keep the door open while bathing?
Because he was afraid that someone might watch him from the key hole.

Santa phoned his wife: I am not coming home. The stearing, dash board, gears of car have been stolen.
After sometime he calls again: I am coming, earlier I sat on the back seat

History teacher asked Santa: Name kalidas's brother who was a shoemaker.
Santa: Adidas
