When it comes to beauty, what you don't do is often more important that what you do. We've put together a list of the 5 most important makeup don'ts, to help you avoid the worst beauty pitfalls. Don't do these, and you're well on your way to looking great!

DON'T #1: Working every feature at once
The secret to looking good in makeup is to pick one facial feature (lips, eyes) to emphasize and play down everything else. So you could do sexy red lips paired with a minimal look for eyes; or smoky eye shadows paired with a pale pastel pout. The key is picking only one feature - otherwise, you end up looking like a circus clown after a makeup factory explosion.

DON'T #2: Drawing a dark line all around your eyes
This look is better left to stage performers and goth girls. If you're neither of these, avoid the raccoon eyes look (it makes your eyes look smaller, anyway - not what you want).

DON'T #3: Putting on eyeliner or lipliner in a hurry
If you don't have the time, skip these cosmetics - or you'll end up regretting it when you catch your reflection later in a mirror. Remember, a messy line looks way worse than no line at all.

DON'T #4: Putting gloss on top of dark lipstick
Gloss can cause the pigment in dark lipstick to bleed, making it tough to keep it on your lips where it belongs. Stick with lipstick alone when you go for dark colors like red or burgundy and save the gloss for layering on top of corals and pastels. If you want the moist-lip look with a deeper color, pick a moisturizing or cream-based lipstick that's formulated to give your lips extra-shine.

DON'T #5: Being matchy-matchy with your makeup
Matching your eye-shadow color to your outfit is a sure way to look like a beauty know-nothing. Try to pick makeup colors that complement what you're wearing, rather than trying to match it. (For example, if you're wearing green, brown eyeshadow might look nice; with a red outfit, pink lipstick is a nice surprise).
