On day 2 of shooting Ram Gopal Varma’s Sholay, the filmmaker is at work in a house near Yari road in suburban Mumbai with the new-age Gabbar Singh played by Amitabh Bachchan. “It’s Amitabh’s introductory scene, since i had to start with Gabbar Singh’s scenes first. Thirty years of the impact that Amjad Khan had on me as Gabbar Singh disappeared in a days’ shooting with Amitabh Bachchan’s performance. Having grown up on Gabbar Singh, to forget the earlier Gabbar wasn’t easy,� says Ram Gopal Verma. Dressed in intimidating clothes with a scorpian-headed stick in his hand, Amitabh Bachchan looks every inch the decadent gangster.
