A Trapped soul

I want to tell you all about an encounter I had. I volunteer to shop for groceries for old people who cant do it themselves. Last week, when 2 other girls and I went to deliver the groceries to this old lady who was in a health care center, we ended up staying there for 45 minutes listening to her.

The lady’s name is Patricia Jones and she is 65 years old.

Here is her story:

When she was in college she met a guy and dated him for 9 months before they got married. The night before they got married, he told her that he was he youngest of 11 kids. Prior to this he had never mentioned any family. She was shocked but accepted it. She said that before they got married she always smelled a distinct odor in his breath, but could never sense what it was. She found out after marriage. It was beer. He was alcoholic and abusive. He used to beat and even tried suffocating her with a pillow. Luckily she survived. She though to herself, “No person can be bad. Everyone has a conscience. He has to have a conscience. If I give him a lot of love and care, he is bound to respond to it.” But she was wrong. He did not have a guilt conscience. Seeing her suffer did not move him. She had 2 kids by him, 2 boys. He abused them too. A few years later she moved out of his house and started to support herself and her kids. Unfortunately, they weren’t divorced yet, so she ended up paying his bills too. I think it was her niceness that made her do this. She worked as a teacher and an industrial advisor for many years before she was laid off. Then she couldn’t find a job for 2years because she was over qualified.

2 years ago both her sons(in their teens) committed suicide because they had never been able to get over their abusive childhood. This news gave her a heart attack. She had a heart surgery which led to several other surgeries. Her mom died 1 week after her heart attack. She has been in hospitals ever since. Her brother died a week ago. She has been in ICU 7 times in the past few weeks. She cannot survive even half a minute without artificial oxygen. When I went there she was changing her tube and she was breathing hard in a matter of 30 seconds of no artificial oxygen.

She is really good at painting, knitting and others kinds of crafts. She has donated several blankets, jackets, paintings, teddy bears to orphanage homes and to abused children.

She is claustrophobic.

Listening to her story had such a big impact on me. I always though nice things happen to nice people. She is such a kind soul and to see her in such a situation really shocked me.

One of the other girls said, “She is a soul trapped inside that body. If she wasn’t in that body, she would be out there helping people.”
