ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES - 2009

1. Ph. D Programme
2. Integrated Ph. D Programme in Physics and Astrophysics in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
3. Integrated M. Tech. - Ph. D (Tech.) Programme in Astronomical Instrumentation in collaboration with University of Calcutta (CU)

Selected candidates will be offered fellowship / stipend as per the norms of the Institute along with an annual book grant, accommodation and medical facilities.

Sun and the solar system: Solar activity, planets, comets, solar terrestrial physics
Stellar physics: Formation and evolution of stars, brown dwarfs, star clusters, planetary nebulae, stellar atmospheres, stellar variability, novae, supernovae
Extragalactic astronomy: Star formation in galaxies, activity in galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies, gamma-ray burst events, Theoretical astrophysics and related physics: Magneto-hydrodynamics and radiative processes in astrophysical objects, pulsars, black hole physics, structure and dynamics of galaxies, relativity, cosmology, atomic and molecular physics
Instrumentation: Back-end instruments for the various observing facilities, space astronomy payloads

Ph.D. PROGRAMME

This is an excellent opportunity for motivated and talented youngsters to enter the exciting field of research in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Selected candidates will be offered a fellowship of Rs.12,000/- p.m., an annual book grant, accommodation, and medical facilities.

Eligibility

Selection Procedure
The selection procedure will involve: a written test and personal interview at IIA, Bangalore. Candidates qualified in Physics test in JEST 2009/ Physics test in GATE 2009 (with high percentile)/ UGC-CSIR NET with fellowship are exempted from the written test.

Duration: 3 hours

The written test will consist of multiple-choice questions on basic Mathematics & Physics and Advanced Physics (M. Sc. Physics syllabus), engineering subjects. Candidates selected to participate in the admission test will receive an admit card from the institute. To participate in the admission test, candidates will have to bring (1) admit card and (2) HB pencil for marking the OMR Answer Sheet. Based on the test results, candidates will be called for interviews at IIA.

This year (2009) JEST is being administered by the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata.

Integrated Ph.D. Programme
IIA is happy to announce the launch of the integrated Phd Programme (IPhD) in Physics. The Integrated PhD Programme (IPhD) will admit bright, highly motivated students with Bachelor's degree in Science/Engineering, selected on an all-India basis. Selected candidates will be offered a fellowship of Rs.10,000/- p.m., an annual book grant, accommodation, and medical facilities.

Further details on the programme
Upon successful completion of two years in the programme the candidates will be awarded a Masters' Degree in Physics. The candidates with a minimum Grade Point would continue to work for their Ph.D. advancing the topic of their M.Sc. dissertation with the same guide or if necessary embark upon a new subject with another guide. Some of them may like to leave after completing their M.Sc. In the third year of the Programme, students who qualify for continuation in the programme leading to the PhD degree will begin research work. The fellowship will be enhanced to Rs. 12000/pm beginning the third year and to Rs. 14000/pm beginning the fifth year of the programme. The normal duration of the IPhD programmewill be 6 years, including the minimum 2 years for the Masters' Degree. The candidates would satisfy all the administrative requirements of The University along the way and submit their Ph.D. thesis to The University not later than the end of the sixth year.



Integrated M.Tech.- Ph.D (Tech.)
IIA is happy to announce the launch of the Integrated M.Tech.- Ph.D (Tech) course in Astronomical Instrumentation in collaboration with Department of Applied optics and photonics, Calcutta University (CU). The Degree will be awarded by the University of Calcutta. The duration of M.Tech course work will be of 2 years divided into 4 semesters. After successful completion of the M. Tech course a student can opt for registration for Ph.D (Tech) programme at Calcutta University, subjected to a selection procedure and minimum cut-off grade.

Programme Description
The Integrated M.Tech- PhD (Tech) Programme will admit bright, highly motivated students with a three years B.Tech. degree (Post BSc Hons) in Optics and Optoelectronics / Radio Physics and Electronics from CU or B.Tech / BE degree in Electrical/ Instrumentation/ Electronics and Communications /Computer Science and Engineering from an institution recognized by AICTE. A candidate with M.Sc degree in Physics / Electronic Science / Applied Mathematics /Applied Physics from a UGC recognized institution is also eligible to apply.

Candidates will be selected through an all-India examination followed by an interview to be held in Bangalore ( the date will be announced soon). Outstation candidates will be paid return train fare in II Sleeper Class or equivalent bus fare by the shortest route on production of original tickets. GATE qualified candidates with 95 percentile and above can apply directly for the personal interview.

Selected students will be fully supported with a fellowship of Rs. 12,000 per month for the first two years. Students will be provided hostel accommodation, medical facilities; tuition fee will be student’s responsibility.

First two semester classes will be held at the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, Calcutta University. The third and fourth semester comprise of internship at IIA laboratories and projects at field stations respectively. Upon successful completion of two years in the programme the candidates will be awarded a M.Tech in Astronomical instrumentation from Calcutta University. In the third year of the Programme, students who qualify for continuation in the programme leading to the PhD(Tech) degree will begin research work at IIA. The fellowship will be enhanced to research fellows as par the norms of AICTE. The normal duration of the programme will be 6 years, including the minimum 2 years for the Masters' Degree. The candidates would satisfy all the administrative requirements of the University and submit their Ph.D. thesis to The University.
